Lewis Hamilton grabbed his first victory of the season in stunning fashion as Sebastian Vettel Mark Webber broke the cardinal rule of Formula One at the Turkish grand prix.
After 39 laps Webber was poised spearhead another one-two Vettel Istanbul record his third consecutive triumph, Hamilton and McLaren team-mate Jenson Button third and fourth.
But on lap 40, Vettel made move on his Australian team-mate that resulted in the young German crashing out of the race, the despair of Red Bull’s team boss, Christian Horner, and Adrian Newey, the technical director.
This allowed Hamilton Button slip into first second and, despite enduring their own hair-raising moment, Hamilton, 2008 world champion, took chequered flag end run of nine races without win.
Vettel attempted his ill-advised move down straight into turn 12, pulling alongside Webber and edging his way across towards centre track, perhaps hoping Australian would yield. Instead, right rear Vettel’s Red Bull collided with front left Webber’s car with German coming off worse as he was sent into spin and forced retire on spot.
Webber lost left end-plate his front wing, forcing him into making second pit stop replacement.
Then, at the end lap 49 the start lap 50, Button attempted an overtaking manoeuvre Hamilton beginning at the same point where Vettel Webber had collided.
As Button passed Hamilton entry into turn 12 the duo touched wheels, with the world champion taking the lead turns 13 14. But, slip-streaming Button along the pit straight, Hamilton managed regain the lead entry into turn one, forcing the 30-year-old run wide.
Following that brief skirmish, both drivers were told to conserve fuel, which led to Button falling behind Hamilton and finishing 2.6sec behind at the flag as the younger man ended run nine races without win.
Webber comfortably held third ahead Michael Schumacher, followed Nico Rosberg, Robert Kubica, Felipe Massa, Fernando Alonso, Vitaly Petrov, Adrian Sutil. Kamui Kobayashi took 10th Sauber’s first point the season.
Despite the drama Webber has increased his advantage in the title race five points over Button, with Hamilton further four points behind. Alonso Vettel drop fourth fifth.
As the race was finishing, the young German driver was seen personally apologising members the Red Bull team destroying their chances another impressive victory.
