Ron Artest grabbed an errant Kobe Bryant shot with 1 second left and muscled up a lay-up at the buzzer to defeat the Suns last night.
The Suns had stormed back from an 18 point deficit and had just tied up the game with a Jason Richardson desperation three-pointer.
The shot made up for a horrendous blunder by Artest just a few minutes earlier. After getting hold of a loose ball and refreshing the shot clock with under a minute to go, Artest launched an uncontested three pointer. The entire crowd, Phil Jackson and every single teammate seemed absolutely shocked by the decision. Several Lakers stood there and stared at Artest in bewilderment, something I’m sure that’s happened a time or two before.
When asked after the game about the shot, Artest went into some kind of strange soliloquy involving “playing basketball” and “Queensbridge”. It’s a must listen if you get a chance.
The Lakers will now return to Phoenix with a 3-2 lead and a chance for a return trip to the NBA finals.
